Impeccable costumes make a good movie extra special, and these ladies are giving us the ultimate party inspiration. From Cinderella to Gentlemen Prefer Blonde’s Lorelei, we’re running down some of the greatest movie dresses of all time; past and present.
Last year’s Cinderella dazzled us with a baby blue dream of a dress, consisting of hundreds of thousands of crystals and eight elegant skirts. A shimmering corset made way to tumbling iridescent tulle for a ball gown fit for a princess.
Its fair to say Cecelia’s green dress became the defining look of her Atonement performance. In a bewitching emerald green satin, the slip dress was said to represent two of the overriding themes of the film; jealousy and temptation.
MAGGIE: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF
This might not be overwear, but Maggie’s satin slip dress in buttercup yellow is a flawless example of her impeccable style. Pretty much pioneering the underwear as outerwear trend in the first scene of the 1958 movie, she blew audiences away with this look.
Hurtling around New York attempting to complete a number of extravagant dares created by online game Nerve, Vee’s most iconic outfit is a sequin dress she takes from a department store. The sparkling piece was made especially for the movie and with it’s mermaid-like quality, it’s more relevant to party season than ever. Nerve is now available on digital download, DVD and Blu-Ray.
VIVIAN: PRETTY WOMAN
She’s a classic movie character with iconic sartorial silhouettes- but it wasn’t those knee high boots or cut-out dress that had us in awe- we’re talking about THAT scarlet piece. The red ruched gown looked stunning on Vivian, with it’s off shoulder detail accompanied by a red lip and crisp white gloves.
Who could forget the iconic moment when Rose descended the staircase to meet Jack, dressed in a sparkling black gown? A period-appropriate square neckline made way for bejewelled hair- it’s fair to say we were all wishing we were her at that moment.
LORELEI: GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
Wearing shocking pink and dripping with diamonds, Lorelei’s gown resembled a giant ribbon as she performed that famous rendition of Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend. Who doesn’t love a decadent pair of matching gloves to go with it?
AURORA: SLEEPING BEAUTY
Who could deny the magic of that archetypal Disney dress that changed colours in Sleeping Beauty? With the fairies fighting over what shade her gown should be, the princess sees the piece transform from fuchsia to midnight blue on repeat throughout the movie.
KATNISS: THE HUNGER GAMES
Created as a spectacle to the audience by her designer, Katniss’ fire red dress is seen literally igniting when she twirls in The Hunger Games. The delicate tulle and one shoulder detail juxtaposes the danger on the train, a symbol of her underdog status in the first instalment of the franchise.
