Ah, ya big softy. We know that sometimes you just wanna be all loved-up, clutching an Adele album and sniffing a red rose, and that's ok. Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year where you can get away with listening to music that mentions the word ‘love’ in every second line and exclusively uses piano. That doesn’t mean though that you have to dust off your old Celine Dion CD to find all the feels. We’ve put together 10 ballads from the last year that will still give you warm and fuzzies.
Adele is good for any intensely emotional situation. Someone Like You is obviously the greatest breakup song of all time but it turns out she also pens a mean love song. Remedy off her latest record 25 is a big, bold, heart-on-sleeve love song that’s destined to give you all the feels. “Just look and you will see that I will be your remedy,” she sings. *Shivers*
RIHANNA- LOVE ON THE BRAIN
Rihanna has never been a ballad popstar but she popped this one on her latest ANTI and it’s a scorcher. Leave it to RiRi to make the sexiest love song of all time. Love On The Brain is a meaty, bold ballad about that feeling when love makes you so dizzy that you don’t even know yourself. She’s drunk on love and we’re always drunk on Rihanna, tbh.
FRANK OCEAN- IVY
“I thought that I was dreaming when you said you loved me,” is the first line. The. First. Line. That’s exactly how you start a love song and exactly how you make someone swoon within seconds. Frank’s voice is enough to make anyone weak but pair it with this beautiful, simple melody and you’ve got one of the greatest love songs of all time. If this doesn’t win over your date, then we’re sorry to tell you but it’s just never gonna work.
BRUNO MARS- VERSACE ON THE FLOOR
Who said ballads can’t be sexy? Bruno Mars’ expensive 24K ballad Versace On The Floor is all about getting naked and we’re 1,000% here for it. Without even listening to the lyrics, the throwback vibes of this cut will get you hot under the collar. It’s a silky smooth jam for the ages.
LONDON GRAMMAR- ROOTING FOR YOU
We shed a tear nearly every time we hear London Grammar but there’s something warm and fuzzy about this one that will leave your heart beating. “I will be here with you just like I told you I would,” frontwoman Hannah Reid sings, feeling like a big ‘ol virtual hug immediately. This one’s understated but it’s so, so beautiful.
EMELI SANDE- SHAKES
Along with Adele, Emeli Sande is Queen of the ballads and while her latest album is jam packed with heartache there’s one song that centres around love. Shakes is all about giving the one you love everything in the world and she sings her heart out over strings and a piano. We’re not crying, you are.
JAMES BLAKE- F.O.R.E.V.E.R
James Blake’s ballad is for the pessimistic lover. People talk about eternal love but Blake’s not having any of that. He knows that love isn’t going to last forever and, to be honest, your Valentines Day lovers aren’t gonna last forever. Still, he’s living in the moment and letting you know, “how wonderful you are.” Yes, James you may be our Valentine.
VERA BLUE- HOLD
Aussie songstress Vera Blue has written the quintessential love song about being in love with everything that somebody does. Blue is handing her heart to her love on a heart amidst a big, glorious chorus.
AMY SHARK- ADORE
Please let us know if there is a more romantic line than, “I want the entire street out of town just so I can be alone with you,” so that we can tell you you’re wrong. Amy Shark’s Adore is so beautifully fragile that it would make even the most reluctant of lovers go week at the knees.
ZAYN- FOOL FOR YOU
If we need to explain the appeal of a Zayn Malik love song to you then you probably won’t get it anyway. Gigi Hadid gets it, we get it, so should you.
To save you the work, we’ve made the playlist for you with a few extras:
