An Interview with Samm Henshaw

Samm Henshaw has been gaining quite the reputation over the past couple of years with his authentic and original take on soul. Having started off practising in his Uni halls, Samm and his band, The Sound Experiment, have come a long way since. The release of their second EP together, The Sound Experiment II, this year has shown a huge development in them as a band and in Samm as a songwriter and vocalist.

Their hard work hasn't gone unnoticed either. They've played a string of festivals over summer and a headline gig in London's Village Underground in October, as well as appearing on Later... With Jools Holland in the same month, as they continue to build a reputation as ones to watch in the UK. With such a distinct style and sound, we knew we had to chat to one of the UK's biggest talents to get the low down on future projects, where we can catch the guys playing and Samm's favourite pieces in his wardrobe.

First off, how’s your year been? Any major highlights?

This year has been amazing, I’ve been proper blessed, we’ve done so many festivals and shows in the UK and Europe and have been out in America recording, so far I think show wise has to be Afropunk festival in Paris and now being asked to be on the Chance the Rapper tour.

What projects have you been working on recently we can know about?

I’ve basically just been doing a lot of writing recently, I have quite a few songs I’m excited about so hopefully we’ll have one come out before the year's out.

What other artists should we know about for people who love your sound?

At the moment I’m a big fan of Tingsek a swedish musician and also Bernhoft he’s from Norway, you gotta check these guys out! From the UK has to be Shakka, Ray Blk and JP Cooper.

If you could collaborate with anyone, past or present, who would it be?

I’m sure I’d be so nervous I probably would have passed out in the session but if it was anyone it would be MJ for sure, he’s just like that guy, a musical genius!

Where can we catch you playing over the rest of the year?

Well I have my headline show at Village Underground 10th October, Then I’m off to Holland and Belgium for a short tour early November, after that I’ll be supporting Chance the Rapper in Europe for the rest of November.

Any pre-show rituals?

I think everyone in the band has their individual rituals but together pre-show we always take part in a huddled prayer and then our "Cheesecake" chant before we hit the stage, (you’ll have to see it to understand).

1 piece of clothing you can’t live without?

It would have to be a hat, any sort just a hat, they cover your hair when I can’t be bothered to get a hair cut and they also keep your head warm!

Any trends at the moment you’re loving?

I'm loving socks at the moment, rolling up your jeans and having a cool pair of socks.

And any you’re hating?

Not at the moment, I feel especially in Europe we have quite a cool eclectic style which I really dig.

Biggest style icon for you?

Probably at the moment it will be Pharell - everything he does oozes cool man!
